Purpose of Policy
The purpose of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Policy is to set out Hindmarsh Shire Council’s commitment to being a welcoming, fair, and inclusive organisation and community. As the level of government closest to residents, Council plays an important role in making sure everyone can take part in community life, access services, feel safe, and be treated with respect.
This policy also helps Council meet its responsibilities under key laws such as the Local Government Act 2020, the Equal Opportunity Act 2010, the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006, the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and other legislation that protects people’s rights and promotes fairness. By adopting this policy, Council is laying the groundwork for more inclusive decision‑making, services and workplaces in the future.
