At the Council meeting held on Wednesday 28 October 2026, Council resolved to give public notice of its intention to sell the Old Workshop Building located at 11 Roy Street, Jeparit (Lots 1-2 TP666030), under section 114(2)(a) of the Local Government Act 2020.
Following the construction of a new and compliant workshop in Jeparit, the Old Workshop Building is now surplus to Council’s operational requirements. Retaining the building for community use would not remove Council’s ongoing obligations as the asset owner to ensure that the building is safe, fit for its intended use and maintained to the required standards. This would require Council to continue funding inspections, maintenance, repairs, insurance, utilities and future renewal or compliance works, despite the building no longer being required for Council service delivery.
The disposal of the property would therefore reduce Council’s exposure to ongoing and potentially increasing asset management costs and liabilities, while supporting the responsible rationalisation of Council’s building portfolio. This is particularly important given Council’s extensive asset base, limited rate revenue and the competing need to direct available funding towards roads, bridges, recreation facilities and other community infrastructure that Council is required to maintain.
Sale of the property may also provide an opportunity for private or community-based investment that gives the site a productive future without Council continuing to carry the financial responsibility for a surplus building. On balance, disposal represents a more financially sustainable approach and enables Council resources to be directed towards assets and services that provide the greatest ongoing benefit to the broader community and ratepayers.
