In response to significant disruptions in global recycling markets, the Victorian Government introduced new policies aimed at standardising household waste and recycling services across the state by 2030. These measures are designed to ensure a more sustainable recycling system for Victoria's future.

To be compliant with the Circular Economy (Waste Reduction and Recycling) Act 2021, Council is progressively implementing changes to its collection services including implementing a kerbside glass recycling collection.

Since the introduction of kerbside glass collection in Hindmarsh Shire in July 2023, on average over 7 tonnes of glass has been successfully diverted from landfill on every collection cycle.

Council has been monitoring the collection rate of purple glass bins on collection days throughout the Shire. On average, only 20% of purple glass bins were put out for collection on the collection day (every eight weeks). Based on the results, Council is proposing to extend the glass collection frequency from every eight weeks to every twelve weeks, to ensure that the service is utilised at a much higher rate. The introduction of the Container Deposit Scheme in Victoria has also significantly reduced the quantity of glass collected in kerbside services. Extending the collection period to twelve weeks will provide both financial and environmental benefits.

Before Council makes a decision on this, we want to hear from you. Please provide your feedback on the proposed changes, please complete our feedback form below.

All feedback received will be provided to Councillors to help them make their decision at a future Council meeting.

Submissions close 11:59pm on Monday 2 June 2025.
